My name is Shannon. Nasty Folks came into being as a direct response to President Trump’s (ugh) inauguration. I, like many, spent January 20th in a persistent state of nausea and completely overcome with dread. The Women’s March the next day left me empowered for the first time since election night, but I was terrified that I was going to lose my newfound drive to complacency as time passed. I didn’t want to be one of those white women that only showed up for her own cause and then bowed out. I wanted to put my money where my mouth was and start enacting real change in the world, but I had no idea how.
On my way back to Austin on Sunday morning, a simple idea struck me. I use Slack at my job, I’ve used it with close friends, and I’ve seen other groups begin to create their own teams as well. I decided to reach out to the folks in my Facebook feed who are 100% cooler than me, and whom I’ve always admired, and asked them to join my Slack team as a place to collaborate, organize local events, and share news and articles with one another.
We’re about a week and a half in, but we’ve reached 45 members. We’ve already organized events (postcard parties, ftw!), attended protests, and supported each other. I’m not sure what the future has in store for us, but being in contact with such amazing people has made my heart so happy. It gives me the courage to fight for what is right.
So if you’re like I was and feeling a little lost, craving a community that supports your #nastyliberal ways, shoot us an email or fill out our contact form for an invite. We’re stronger together, and we need to be tough as hell to keep on #resisting.
